The Way Home

My thesis follows the story of my family’s immigration from Myanmar to Canada. This history is explored through nostalgia from its Greek origin: nostos meaning ‘return home’ and algos meaning ‘pain’. It explores how we experience these pains and adapt to them and grow with them. Finding small ways to return home while away from home.

My grandparents helped found a Burmese Association here in Toronto. It was a nice community for them here.

My mom told me in a car ride that my grandpa used to sneak by border guards to meet my grandma. I think it's insane, and very cool of him.

My grandma used to live in Taunggyi, everything was on the water. I remember her stories about it.

Growing up I heard a lot of stories about my family and where we came from. All that I know and learned has come from my family’s stories and what I imagined Myanmar to be like, both as a kid and even now.

Growing up in Canada I felt a disconnect from my heritage and culture. This image represents that struggle with identity.
