01: Jury Consideration: Jehaz Ki Doli (Palanquin of Dowry)
The dowry is an ancient cultural custom that has been practised for generations. Dowry binds the bride to her groom's family in exchange for their duties as a maid. Dowry is still practised in several cultures across the world. In our Canadian South-Asian community, dowry still exists. Dowry degrades our women and robs them of their freedom. They are harassed and abused daily for the quality of their material wealth because of the dowry.
The Ruksati/Barat/Vidai ceremony is meant to honour a bride's first journey from her parents' home, which is no longer associated with her wedding. Doli symbolizes well wishes and a gentle farewell to the bride's maternal family before she leaves... More
