““CU IRL” imagines how niche online interest groups would navigate social dynamics if they inhabited speculative worlds of their own, safe from the public scrutiny of real life. The series depicts how the internet is reshaping notions of what community and social spheres should look like.”
Brian Jiang is a queer non-binary artist and illustrator of Chinese descent based in Toronto. Their practice comprises of drawing, painting, illustration, sequential narrative, and animation. Brian's current work primarily investigates the creation of hypothetical worlds and the reinterpretation of memories and experiences. Their recent work is often playful in tone, with content that usually comprises of ambiguous characters, fantastical scenarios, and lush flora. Brian's image-making balances bold gestural mark making, flat colour planes, implied textural effects, with subtle details and patterning. They are drawn to unconventional colour palettes that are simultaneously discordant yet visually satisfying. Brian’s work references the formal qualities of folk art, 60’s Japanese Graphic design, Fauvism and Surrealism. They graduated OCADU in 2020, holding a Bachelor's of Design in Illustration.
