Solid aluminum cast
18 inches x 12 inches x 48 inches
This sculpture is a solid aluminum cast of a life-sized jackal (in Bulgarian, Chakal). Its fabrication combines both handcrafting and digital manipulation. Starting with a small sculpted animal, the form is digitized through 3D scanning. The 3D form is then augmented in CAD software to enhance certain features and distort others, further adding to the narrative of displacement and distortion. The digital model is brought to life through CNC milled molds and sand-casting in solid metal, giving it existence and permanence. The imagery of the animal, combined with its elongation through contemporary fabrication, represents a distortion of the animal's literal depiction. It invites the audience to sit on it and view the other pieces in the series when displayed together. This piece is the first in a series called Art Colony Village Chakali.
