Trends Towards Piety: Discursive Artifacts
Mixed Media
Trends Towards Piety: Situating Muslimah Identity Through Discursive Artifacts is a thesis exploration into discursive artifacts that situate multiple perspectives of Muslimah (Muslim women) identity. The stories told are mainly centered on personal experiences of young, hijab-wearing urban Indonesian women. These perspectives are implemented through use of democratized new media technology, such as MAR (Mobile Augmented Reality) and digital games. The two artifacts, 'Cergam Muslimah' and 'Aisha' are prototypes that reimagine more nuanced forms to situate expressions of identity, away from the confines of Instagram. 'Cergam Muslimah' consists of three Augmented Reality Zines, while 'Aisha' is a personal game that follows a hijabi player character. The thesis document grounds the historical context for the work, the core of the investigation into Instagram influencers dubbed the "Hijabers", and the threads in which the discursive artifacts create in furthering the discourse.Game is playable at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/293634471/. The three AR zine experiences can be found on the website URL.
“These artifacts present various techniques to elaborate on the notion of a multiple self, through use of democratized new media technology in the landscape of 21st century, post-Islamist Indonesia.”
