A study of community living at Broadview
Environmental Design
2021
This project aims at increasing the supply of housing while promoting community living. The designated site is located at the intersection of Broadview Avenue and Hillside Drive, where a design model of a mixed-use building which blends commercial, entrepreneurial and residential spaces will be deployed. The design strategies are to promote social interaction, inclusivity, well-being and work opportunities for the residents of this neighborhood. Those intentions are illustrated through the various spaces provided in the building, the ground floor is the area where the inhabitants of the neighborhood meet with the residents of the building, this is where the exchange of both cultures and wealth happens. The design model provides rental spaces for entrepreneurs living in the building and assistance for those with physical limitations which allow the users to grow independently and also participate in community life. The apartment block is oriented towards the south to maximize the amount of sunlight penetrating both the courtyard and the residential units. In addition, a greenhouse with solar panels integrated on its shell is placed on the 4th floor, in order to allow the residents to grow their own crops. The design model can also be deployed in other neighborhoods, however a study of the designated neighborhood will be required so as to promote community living according to the need of the area and users.
“Based on a study of community living at Broadview Avenue, the current housing typologies demonstrated a scarcity of habitation that would allow its inhabitants to live safely and independently, while promoting social interaction among neighbors.”
