This piece is about the censorship of any images of poverty in Mexico’s tourist areas. Last year, I travelled to Tulum, one of the most popular tourists’ spots in Mexico. My family and I went on a tour around the city and the guide decided to bring us to an area that was not scheduled on the trip. He wanted to show us the less travelled areas, those that were stricken with poverty. I had only realized at that moment that poverty did not have a boundary and that even the most popular tourist cities would have areas such as this. I had also realized how much effort was put into censoring any and all images of poverty within tourist destinations.
