Stores use slow-paced music to make customers subconsciously move slower themselves and increase their time in the store. This creates room for impulse buying and benefits the stores profits.
“The fifth illustration within my thesis project Wavelength. Music is used in consumer psychology with a focus of grocery stores, who play slow-tempo music so their shoppers subconsciously move slower as well. This allows for the customers to spend more time in the store and succumb to impulse shopping, spending more money boosting profits for the store. This piece shows the manipulative nature of the management of these stores, looking on at their consumers being controlled by the music.”
