Bread & Butter
Illustration
“Bread and Butter” shows how the perpetuation of the “American Dream” romanticizes the necessary survival & pressures of assimilation that immigrants face in a foreign land. This menu/zine acts as a physical veil between the surface level perception of American-Chinese food & the reality: the unnoticed hard work that is rarely respected. Inspired by the phrase, 懂得付出,才有收获 (have to pay the harvest), often repeated by Chinese restaurant workers, this piece illustrates the nuanced moments that may occur in a family-owned restaurant.
“Hierarchies of Taste' critiques the divisiveness of the food industry by reinterpreting common food idioms, exposing how invisible barriers prevent food’s ability to bring people together.”
