“This painting was created for the class "Extreme Abstraction", taught by Jason Baerg, and assisted by Casper Sutton-Fosman.This work was for the assignment “A Vehicle for Visioning”, wherein students depict the ways in which they picture the futureI often picture the future as very bleak, a world ridden with global warming, political strife, famine, disease, and death. However, on the other hand, I often like to daydream that our future could be a sort of utopia for everyone, where every identity and existence is celebrated, and people are free to express themselves as they wish.Within this utopia, I envision queer people having full autonomy over their bodies, full creative freedom over how they appear, and when their forms may change. Furthermore, I think about the ways in which the future of technology, science, and medicine will allow for such physical changes to take place, and to what extent. I also think about how much of a person can be changed before they are no longer a person, or human; and what do we define a human as?For this assignment, I’ve painted a transfemme individual, and their android partner next to them. There are two narratives I envision with this piece, one being that this android was a past partner of the human, who, through technology, had their consciousness placed into an artificial body, but somewhere along the way, that which defines a “human” was lost, and they are now a shell of their former self. The second narrative is that the human was seeking a partner in this utopian society, and various companies offered android partners for people to purchase, however, these android beings lack the full scope and range of emotions that humans contain, and are highly idealized to societal norms, which causes the couple to feel a large disconnect between each other.- Em Vizcaino <3”
