Coded Collages

Digital Media
2020
Code written in Processing 3
This piece of code generates random collages using images from Flickr.com using a Flickr API. Given a set of parameters and a keyword to search, this tool takes creative control away from the designer by generating works of art that are truly random. The API fetches images from Flickr.com and randomly scales, rotates, and places the images on the canvas. The user only has control over the filters and blending options that the program will use, but has no creative control over the outcome of the design. By automating the creative process, the computer generates collages that are sometimes confusing and absurd. While other times it generates collages that are compositionally beautiful and intriguing. This project can be used in a variety of ways such as developing mood boards, quickly generating posters, prints, promotional materials, etc., or it could be used to create meaningless pieces of art. These are some of the more interesting compositions I have created using this piece of code.
