Digital Painting, Rotoscope Animation
Fantasy & Fabrication consists of eight iterations, each with three parts. A series of digital paintings each paired with a rotoscope animation and time lapse footage of the artwork being created. Centered around Dungeons & Dragons, the project aims to introduce those unfamiliar with the game, but more importantly provide a sense of escapism. The title is a play on Dungeons & Dragons, I love alliteration and use it in most of my titles. Fantasy & Fabrication not only relates to D&D but explains the project as well. I'm fabricating these fantasy characters, in a fantasy setting, in relation to a fantasy game. The semi realistic style lends itself well to D&D art, its fantastical and whimsical enough to not be uncanny, but still grounded in an identifiable real world. Using D&D as a root for the project I play with themes of escapism and chance. For people who already play D&D, they can add these characters into their own games. For so many D&D is used to take their mind off the real world, even for just a few hours. I wanted to achieve something similar with this project, my hope is for people to spend some time looking at the characters and getting lost in the speed paints, let the real world melt away in favour of something more fantastical. I want them to remember playing pretend as a child, and how fun that was. That’s all D&D really is one big game of pretend.
