“Colour Me Perfect is a 2D, Black-and-White animation based on the idea that beauty standards are an archaic ego. This animation explores the impact these standards have on women. Weapons of the oppressor and enforced by the media, these beauty standards are discriminatory and ephemeral that cause long-term harm both mentally and physically. The story follows the main character struggling to adapt to the continuously changing beauty standards as we are taken on a journey of self-reflection while experiencing the cause and effects of “ingesting” these beauty standards. Inspired by Edward Hopper’s paintings and William Kentridge’s style of storytelling, aesthetics for this abstract conceptual short speak to the painterly style of traditional painting to reflect the emotions captured by organic mark-making. Working with the themes of sexism, capitalism, and media power, this work aims to bring a new perspective and create a conversation around the futility of beauty standards.
