Soft Pastel Pencils

This drawing is based on an archival photograph of my grandmother as a young adult, taken during the summertime. There is a sense of ease in the way she moves through the space, barefoot and unguarded, her posture relaxed as she carries small objects that suggest an ordinary, everyday moment. She faces away from the viewer, which keeps the scene quiet and somewhat restrained. The original photograph had a yellow tone. In translating it into a drawing, I built up a red-based palette, guided by the kind of warmth and light the image suggests. The colour isn’t meant to match the scene exactly, but to lean into that atmosphere. Soft layers of pastel let the warmth build slowly, creating a sense of heat that spreads across the surface rather than concentrating in one area. The palette stays simple, which helps keep that warmth consistent.Working from this image, I kept coming back to how much of it relies on atmosphere rather than sharply defined detail. It’s less about defining everything and more about holding onto the specific warmth and light conditions that shape the moment.
