Nurture vs. Nurture

Sculpture
2020
Clay (air dry and polymer clay), aluminum wire, and acrylic paint on wood panel.
12 x 10 x 12"
Multi-media sculpture. Winter 2020

“This piece reflects the influence of culture and tradition taught to me since birth by my family, compared to culture taught by institutions. I chose to incorporate traditional Oriental elements such as the koi fish and red-yellow pot, and contrast those with the Impressionism-inspired base and the contemporary nature of the sculpture itself. I wanted to focus on technical elements of this sculpture as well- structural integrity, accuracy in portraying the figure, and creating a "floating" effect to the elements of the sculpture that symbolize growth and change.”
