An adaptive reuse project of the existing abandoned megastructure "Playdium" in downtown Mississauga, redesigned for a youth-orientated space.

“This thesis examines the revitalization of abandoned mega structures in the Downtown Mississauga area through an adaptive reuse project. Repurposing these neglected sites has the potential to revitalize surrounding neighbourhoods, attract new activity and preserve the architectural and cultural identity of the community. Effectively transforming underutilized structures into vibrant, youth community-oriented spaces designed to address the lack of youth afterschool programs and youth crime as a result. The research emphasizes the role of the built environment in shaping the mental, emotional, and social development of teenagers and young adults. In a rapidly developing city such as Mississauga, the creation of safe, welcoming, and nurturing environments is essential to fostering a sense of belonging and stability among youth populations. Architecture, in this context, functions not only as physical shelter but as an active agent in social care and community-building. Rather than viewing these buildings as obsolete, the thesis positions them as critical spatial resources capable of supporting mentorship, education, creative expression, and collective gathering. Central to this approach is the creation of inclusive social hubs designed to foster connection, support local engagement and encourage long-term community resilience. Through adaptive reuse, this thesis argues that abandoned megastructures can be transformed from symbols of urban neglect into anchors of social infrastructure, contributing to a more equitable, connected, and resilient Downtown Mississauga. The project is grounded in the concept of a garden bed, a space designed to support, protect, and nurture growth. To develop this idea, the design draws from the conditions that make a garden bed effective: layered structure, strong foundations, and an environment that encourages steady development over time. The building is organized like a living cell, with a central “nucleus” in the form of a shared lounge that anchors the space and encourages social interaction. Around this core, each level functions as a different layer of soil, supporting growth in distinct but interconnected ways. The ground level, housing the café, lobby, lounge, and gaming areas, acts as the bedrock. It establishes a foundation for connection, where relationships are formed and a sense of belonging begins. Above this, the second floor contains workshops, a gym, library, maker space, and studio. This level represents the topsoil, where deeper growth occurs through skill-building, creativity, and self-development. At the top, the roof becomes the surface layer, the most visible expression of growth. Overlooking downtown Mississauga, it reflects progress and perspective, marking how far individuals have come. Within this environment, youth are understood as seeds. As they move through the building, they are supported at each stage, gradually developing, connecting, and ultimately flourishing.”
