The Catch
Drawing
2026
Soft Pastel Pencils
13" x 18"
This drawing is based on an archival photograph of my dad holding his first pike, caught on his first fishing trip with two of his closest friends. It captures a moment that feels both casual and significant, marked by a contained sense of pride. His expression is relaxed, but there is a noticeable awareness of the moment itself and of what the catch represents. The original photograph had a muted, slightly grainy quality. In translating it into a drawing, I leaned into a more saturated green and blue palette, reflecting the murky tones of the water and the surface of the fish. The colour helps anchor the image in that environment, while also emphasizing the physical weight of the fish and its presence in his hands. I kept the surface active, allowing the texture to build through layered marks, which connects back to the grain of the original photograph and the way I naturally work. For me, this piece became a way of staying with that moment of pride rather than letting it pass quickly. It is not exaggerated, but it is clearly there, carried through his expression and the way he presents the fish.
