This particular work is focused on the Chinese emperor Ai of Han and his cut sleeve. One night his favourite male concubine fell asleep on the emperor's sleeve. Since the emperor did not want to wake his lover, he grabbed scissors and cut the sleeve off. Cutting off the sleeve became a euphemism for being gay in Chinese culture.
