CALLIGRAPHY AS A CULTURAL EXPRESSION: Through a Modern Lens

The diversity of Toronto integrates a plethora of cultural districts, buildings, and neighbourhoods representing many ethnicities. The thesis takes ‘Culture’ as a means of preserving identities and traditions of communities allowing an expansion of knowledge, and considering the socio-cultural aspect of design. As a way to maintain a diverse rhythm in Toronto, the thesis proposes a cultural centre that aims to express the Arab identity through the Arabic language. The proposed building emphasizes the poetics of language through Arabic Calligraphy. The origins of Arabic calligraphy are a fundamental aspect of Islamic art, as well as being respected as the first script in which the Quran was written. It continued as an ornamental aspect in the field of architecture and remains a current developing art form in the contemporary world. The proposed building aims to exhibit the journey of calligraphy exhibiting its development over time. The interiors will emulate Arabic calligraphy through contemporary expression shown in the experiential qualities and material symbolism of the spaces.The building will be situated in a neighbourhood that will encourage the continuous development of cultural buildings and will cater to the community in impactful ways through educational leisure. This will allow the understanding of an important traditional aspect of Arabic culture that continues to develop in contemporary ways. The building will speak to both the young and old demographics to allow people to gain a strong understanding of a fundamental factor of Arabic culture, and to develop their own opinions and different experiences. This would be to create a cultural centre both socially and economically viable.
