STROKE utilizes the replicating mechanisms of the pantograph to translate writing gestures through different styluses. The primary holder uses a pencil, while the secondary holder can be adapted with various drawing instruments. As one end moves, the other follows. Based on the stylus’s width, angle, rigidity, and material, the resulting form varies dramatically. In essence, it is an encoded replication system capable of outputting marks with different qualities based on the same letterform. Due to the simultaneity with which both styluses write, there is no clear logical order: the letterform is derived from the gesture as much as the gesture is derived from the letterform. The consequent mark-making system investigates the relationship between the two. As such, STROKE explores the historically significant connection between styluses, styles, glyph systems, and languages.
