A Reflection of You

The Reflection of You is a visual tribute to the women in my family; an exploration of memory, identity, and generational connection. The work pieces together who they were before the Civil War and the lives they lived. The images move from intimate details to full presence, echoing my journey of rediscovery. What began as faded memories and archival footage became stories of beauty, kindness, and strength. I realized I carry those same traits and that I am their reflection.The series of images showcases a flow of work that dances through the viewer's eyes as each image gradually gets larger and focuses on fewer items. Each image focuses on different characteristics of myself, while wearing a traditional Afghan dress with jewelry passed on to me from my mother.Accompanied by a video with beautiful handwritten Farsi (Persian) that features close-ups of the women of my family’s eyes, each describing who they were as young women in their twenties, with different traits and personalities.This project is for them—for the women who raised me, whose past lives in the present. This is how I remember, how I reconnect, and how I thank them for making me who I am—a vessel of their unspoken histories, shaped by strength, softness, and stories.
