A purchased IKEA sign which reads: "democratised... disposable... in between the margins of production. An inventory of accumulating things in an only partially realised form."
“I think of IKEA as this perfect corporate analogue for contemporary art. If we can think of it as an accumulative pile, split and amoebic, semi-permeable and voracious, something always in-between, waiting in the wings off stage left: a methodology of what to show and when, all we need is a place. A parallel to consumer-led design, contemporary art is perenially breaking down, dynamically obsolescent in both cultural and aesthetic terms. The democratisation of skill, the disposability of cheap furniture, the readily available partial inventory, the 'progressive' future promised through these factors — a certain theology of 'almost-here'. ”
