"Future Earth": Design Activism

Illustration
2021
This project was one of my favourites to work on despite the tedious hours that went into it. For my illustrative activism class, we were to choose an issue or cause that we feel strongly about and produce two connected deliverables that tell a story. I chose the current climate crisis for my focus as environmentalism is an issue I'm extremely passionate about. The concept behind Future Earth is that humankind is essentially gambling with our survival and the wellbeing of the planet through harmful and careless actions. According to the 2021 climate report from the UN and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "species extinction, more widespread disease, unliveable heat, ecosystem collapse, cities menaced by rising seas and other devastating climate impacts are accelerating and bound to become painfully obvious by 2050". We are locked into 30 years of worsening climate impacts no matter what the world does.I intentionally took a 'fun' and colourful approach to such a grim and frankly, terrifying, subject to draw viewers in and prompt them to think and digest. My second poster seen below is a series of falling playing cards with catastrophic environmental events on them to metaphorically represent how poorly humans have played their cards.

“If you look closely, every space on the Future Earth board game is a disastrous one because there are irreversible consequences we will have to deal with as time goes on. It's a symbolization and a serious call to action that there must be change.”
