Gravitating Geese
Environmental Design
2021
My proposal is to help Canada geese navigate Toronto safely. The city contains many obstructions that are not ideal during migration periods. The objective of my design is to produce sound from these structures to notify geese that these are safe nesting areas for them. Sound is used as the geese are very responsive towards it for communicating.
“Why Canada geese? They interfere with other species negatively. They cause concern over human health and safety as well as land-use.The city contains many obstructions that are not ideal during migration periods. Buildings, transportation, communication towers, wires and wind turbines affect their safety greatly. This matters because Canada geese populate Toronto fairly heavily and tend to be involved in collisions. Collisions continue to increase which threatens their migration and habitats in the city. What is being done now is not helping the environment and will continue to act unsafe if not changed.By using their sense of sound, they will be able to gravitate towards safe nesting areas that were previously deemed as being unsafe environments for Canada geese. As a result, both the geese and humans will share the same space safely and independently.”
