This work reflects on games such as Dark Souls III, where players are able to choose the gender of their character and customize their appearance. This feature can create a space where women are able to play as characters that reflect their own gender without the constraints of misogynistic design or community expectations. Furthermore, the issue of representation extends beyond gender. Where gender diversity is already limited, racial representation is often even more scarce. Character customization systems in certain games therefore offer the possibility of creating avatars that better reflect a wider range of identities and experiences.
