Environmental Design

Throughout the development of my thesis, my goal has always been to focus attention towards a neglected community. I chose a site within Jane and Finch as it is one of the many known neighbourhoods in Toronto that requires care. My project proposes to take over a portion of the eldest (Jane and Finch Mall) of the two malls located at the main intersection and implement a communal engaging program. York University is well known for its creative arts programs, however the Keele campus located within 3 kilometre of the site, lacks an art dedicated building. My project serves as a multipurpose facility. By providing a creative environment for students as well as residential members, the sense of community within the area strenghtens. A wide range of artistic programs are available throughout the three story building to appeal to any medium preference. The structure is primarily composed of glass exterior walls to draw users in by the sight of creative production. Coloured is used to visually express the creative nature of the building’s intention. Primary colours were chosen to allow for an assortment of vibrant colours to reflect through the glass onto the white surface of the structure. The building is designed in such a way that there is no level of superiority, all artists, educated or experienced, share and expand their knowledge with one another.
