Evidenced in collaboration, Shoes Off Collective (SOC) curates deciphering as material, an interdisciplinary exhibition that weaves movement and texture to compost fixed logics of entrenched ideology. Plural and complex relations are translated through time-based media, paintings, and metal sculptures. Embodying queer futurities, members of SOC collaboratively share and create works that envision identities flourishing in nonlinear paths towards collective liberation.
“pendulum series experiments with ideas of flocking. As our bodies oscillate, we create travelling and standing waves, vibrations, and random motions. Drawing from adrienne maree brown’s exploration of nature’s patterns and biomimicry, as models for our justice movements in Emergent Strategy (2019), “flocking” relates to an instinctive, migratory impulse shared by many beings. These beings are called to join together in formation, adapting, resting, and moving forward, collectively. We shadow and interpret one another’s energies and movements through our periphery and proximity. In flight, we digitally remove our recorded place of movement. Together, we improvise and respond slowly; we glitch; we lean into the holes; we question embodiment, viewing our bodies as a wave, or one fluid entity in motion.”
