Pagmamahal: Reminders for You
Animation
A film that questions what the definition of love is to people and how it can be expressed in various ways and focuses on the answers of the artist’s loved ones.
“Pagmamahal: Reminders for You is a 2D animated film by Rayechelle Rondilla that questions the meaning of love and how people show their love. The word “pagmamahal” is a word from the Philippine language that means “to love.” As her film focuses on the different definitions of love, it shows that love can be shown across different languages and meanings. The film is based on an interview she had with five different individuals/pairs, one including herself. In order of appearance, she asks her younger cousin, her grandparents, her parents, and her partner, “What does love mean to you?” Their answers are paired with rotoscoped animations based on real videos and photos of the loved ones. In between the rotoscoped scenes are the artist’s struggles around the topic of love. As her family members portray blissful and hopeful love, love is an emotion she struggles to express and shows her contrast to the topic. As the film progresses, she slowly realizes the meaning of love until she is reminded one by one by her loved ones.”
