Transformation of an O
Environmental Design
2021
This sculptural composition explores the interplay of repetition, rotation, and thickness as primary design operations. The form originates from the repetition of the letter "O", rendered as three distinct circular volumes. These are rotated along varying axes and interlocked, resulting in a dynamic spatial relationship where each "O" serves a structural or spatial function: one forms the base, another acts as support, and the third—the central "O"—stands upright, held in tension between the others. To articulate mass and volume, the central "O" is modulated with variations in thickness. It is segmented into four quadrants on each side, each thickened independently to generate a subtle topographical rhythm surrounding the central aperture. A diagonal support element intersects the form, visually anchoring the structure while reinforcing its spatial logic.A vertical section cut through the central "O" reveals its internal construction—highlighting the layering system, the intersecting support, and the horizontal structural bands that stabilize the upright form. This cut also dramatizes the interaction between solidity and void, and the tension between structural logic and visual expression.
