Like many Desi kids, as a baby, my mom or grandma would draw a kala-tikka (black- spot) with kohl on the temple of my forehead. This mark acts as a distraction to ward off Nazar. Or sometimes they would say, “Nazar na lag-jaye,” expressing, “May you be protected from the evil eye.”
