Axis Mundi, or Spigot of Divination
Sculpture
Ropes suspended from the ceiling in a circular formation, reminiscent of a pillar
“Inspired by Axis Mundi, a sacred symbol expressed by cultures across time which represents the connection between the earthly realm and the heavens, this pillar of rope pools upon the ground and speaks of varied material histories - soft, sturdy cotton to commercial fishing rope. At different heights ceramic charms are tied into the structure: a bell, a severed penis, a candle lit from both sides. The metaphoric potential of thread is referenced in the pillar as the connection between two points. The ceramics form a physical language of divination. ”
