Environmental Design
How do we imagine industrial places? They are usually located on the edges of, or outside, the main residential area of a city. Normally, industrial places are closed to the public and create ignorance, fear to live or be nearby them. This perception is justified by our historical industrialization that has contributed to environmental pollution and the deterioration of health and natural habitats. Since the environmentally friendly industrial processes were invented, the way how we design industrial places should be rethought. The thesis argues that public and industrial spaces should co-exist together in order to educate the public about industrial processes and promote conscious consumption. The project revives industrial use of the Victory Soya Mills area in Toronto by creating an industrial cycle of organic waste to energy and food while weaves the industrial spaces into the city infrastructure and public life.
