When did play become so safe? What if spaces can grow with us?
“The spaces of childhood are shaped long before children ever touch them. In today’s schools, rigid boundaries and traditional design models confine the possibilities for movement, play, and discovery. Classrooms dominate the architectural imagination, while outdoor spaces, playgrounds, transitions, inbetween moments - are often reduced to after thoughts. Yet it is within these fractures curiosity grows strongest. Reimagining elementary school environments to better support children’s exploration, social, and physical well-being, this thesis aims to address these gaps by developing innovative spaces that prioritize inclusivity, sensory engagement, and adaptability. The design features crystals layered to create a unique, playful topography, forming an ever-changing structure. These crystals act as a metaphor for childhood development, suggesting that spaces should not be fixed but rather expand, shift, and adapt to meet evolving needs. ”
