OVUM explores the relationships of instinctual creation and material consciousness within craft and artist expression. Inspired by the universal homebuilding instincts of birds and the historical resourcefulness of basketry, this work explores how both practices transform abundant materials into purposeful structures. Bird nests seamlessly integrate within their natural surroundings, visually and functionally blending into the environment. Within design, this type of unity is paramount. Contemporary basketry reimagines ancient forms, combining innovation with its roots as a tool, shelter and art form. For Stevens, instinctive weaving means being fully present in the moment, allowing the work to evolve organically. It involves responding intuitively to the emerging form and being flexible enough to change course when needed, creating a piece that grows from the maker’s direct interaction with the materials. The approach used in this work encourages the technique of coil weaving to become meditative through binding, wrapping, stitching and repetitive motion. This laborious process yields an object with deeper value to its creator. This parallels material connection and conscious choice-making, suggesting that a stronger connection to an object fosters a more mindful approach to consumption. Through community contribution of relinquished textiles, materials were processed through washing, indigo dyeing and cutting, unravelling them into fibres suitable for weaving.
