Love 'عشق'
Mixed Media
2024
Brass disc, tar, automotive spray, pebble
33.5 inches x 33.5 inches
The series of 'Transformable' mixed media sculptures, forming a constellation around a dinner table delve into the intricate web of historical landscapes shaped by global, political, and environmental forces. Inspired by the interconnectedness of humanity's past, present, and future, each sculpture offers a perspective on our collective journey and our interconnected existence.
“The first work in the series features the word for love, 'عشق', written with tar, utilizing a pebble found on the shores of Lake Ontario as the tool. This stone, is then integrated into the artwork on a large circular brass background. As Sigmund Freud remarked, “as well as Eros there was an instinct of death. The phenomena of life could be explained from the concurrent or mutually opposing action of these two instincts.” (Freud 65-66) A mist of white automotive spray, reminiscent of a fragrance, intertwines the metaphor of oil as 'black gold' with the word love 'عشق', echoing the intertwined histories of carbon dioxide emissions and climate change.Through these sculptures, I intend to explore the complex interplay between love, life, and mortality, intertwined with the broader narratives of global interconnectedness and environmental stewardship. Each piece serves as a conduit for reflection on human history and the natural world.”
