Sequence in the City - “Chinatown Reverie: Tradition in Transition”
Photography
2024
This project explores the urban landscape through two distinct image-making systems — one traditional and one alternative. By combining tools such as digital cameras with mobile devices or apps, participants create sequences or grids that reflect varied perspectives on the city and how technology shapes our visual experience.
“In exploring the vibrant tapestry of urban environments, my lens is drawn towards the intricate layers of cultural heritage woven into the bustling streets of East Chinatown, West Chinatown, and Mississauga Chinatown. Through the fusion of past and present, tradition and modernity is represented through the tools of an iPhone camera, a classic point-and shoot, and a Polaroid camera. By embracing both black & white and color photography, this work transcends the constraints of time, weaving a narrative that seamlessly bridges my deeply personal past and present. Through the juxtaposition of these two visual languages, this series explores the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that defines East Chinatown, West Chinatown, and Mississauga Chinatown, illuminating the enduring beauty and resilience of these vibrant communities.”
