Grain of Salt

“Grain of Salt” applies the idiom to the context of manipulated colonial history & reclaims it through four sculptures of commodity staples; showcasing the stories and food of Indigenous peoples across North America.Each package features an Indigenous chef, their food philosophy and their community. Chefs featured: Brian Yazzie (Diné from Dennehotso, Arizona); Sean Sherman (Oglala Lakota Oyate from Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota); Norma Condo (Mi'kmaw from Gesgapegiag, Quebec); and Shawn Adler (Anishinaabe from Treaty #3, Lac des Milles Lacs First Nation).Whether or not the featured chefs still use or reject these staples, the act of using these “white gifts” as a canvas hopes to acknowledge their history while simultaneously decolonizing indigenous cuisine.
