Grain of Salt
Acrylic Gouache on Recycled Packaging
“Grain of Salt” applies the idiom to the context of manipulated colonial history & reclaims it through four sculptures of commodity staples; showcasing the stories and food of Indigenous peoples across North America. Each package features an Indigenous chef, their food philosophy and their community. Chefs featured: Brian Yazzie (Diné from Dennehotso, Arizona); Sean Sherman (Oglala Lakota Oyate from Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota); Norma Condo (Mi'kmaw from Gesgapegiag, Quebec); and Shawn Adler (Anishinaabe from Treaty #3, Lac des Milles Lacs First Nation).Whether or not the featured chefs still use or reject these staples, the act of using these “white gifts” as a canvas hopes to acknowledge their history while simultaneously decolonizing indigenous cuisine.
“'Hierarchies of Taste' critiques the divisiveness of the food industry by reinterpreting common food idioms, exposing how invisible barriers prevent food’s ability to bring people together.”
