“These sculptures were inspired by the alebrijes and gigantes paper maché sculptures I saw during a residency I did in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2023. They are made of paper and plastic pieces I saved from Oaxaca, combined with things from my everyday life in Toronto – from empty paint containers to McDonald’s wrappers, to things my dear studio mates salvaged and gave me. All these meaningful and mundane scraps combine to form large, magical, and abstract pieces that were constructed from my memories and experiences. ”
