Gillis extends the narrative of Keeper, offering a glimpse into the artist’s mother’s life before the formation of her family. The landscape becomes a site of identity, where memory is embedded within place and shaped by lived experience. Rather than a fixed portrait, the work reflects how selfhood is formed through environment, suggesting that identity is rooted as much in landscape as it is in personal history.
