Waves Dress (2/3)

Water-soluble stabilizers, waste threads, rice starch
37 x 27 inches
This is the second dress I created as a part of my Thesis project: Within The Sea. This dress aims to represent the affects of textile waste on water quality. With the exorbitant amount of water used by the fashion industry during garment production and processing, and then discarding it into natural waterways, the water quality is severely impacted. Furthermore, due to fabric waste also sitting on the water surface, the water quality is affected due to the release of chemicals and dyes that alter the water's ability to sustain multiple forms of aquatic life, the blockage of sunlight, and more. I aimed to represent waves and waste on the water surface, and therefore gave this dress its structure using a water and rice starch mixture as a more sustainable option as opposed to resin.
