Resilience By Prevention (Thesis 2021)

Environmental Design
2021
Project Description: “Resilience By Prevention” is located in Hamilton, Ontario, adjacent to St. Joseph’s Hospital upon the mountain. The project intends to experiment with a new architectural possibility for isolation, post-care and human interaction. Hence, the building is embedded within the health-care system while physically separated to stop spread and contamination and provide supplemental space. This location is close to GTA with accessible transitions, which is convenient for supplying shortages and easing the pressure from globalization impact. It also takes advantage of the site’s nature to elevate this area into a vivifying environment, creating a promising, engaging atmosphere. The building area is divided into three parts. The central diagonal open courtyard separates the building for post-care and the building for isolation without deconstructing the site’s original free circulation. The two buildings’ volume are created by “lifting” the grasslands and keeping them as green roofs. The isolation building is mainly planned with isolation rooms which are transformable to wards and nurse stations. The interior design has custom designed translucent chair walls with interactive info and play screens to encourage exceptional communication between each room. While the opposite wall will be operable to change single rooms to family rooms for different needs. A gym is on the top level with a patio, which needs to book by system to prevent spread. Curtain walls are facing the site’s landscape and bird-eye view of the city to ensure a comfortable environment. The chair walls will also be used as installations in the covered public area for visitors to experience. The post-care building will have telemedicine (exam) room and mental health consultation for people who suffer from sequelae. Conferences and labs are on the second level for research and international study.

“Thesis Statement / Hypothesis: This thesis project is to explore an architectural way for accommodations and new possibilities in response to COVID-19, focusing on prevention and resilience. With a set adjacent to healthcare systems, the building will incorporate with the landscape to propose a safe and promising environment to experiment isolation and aftercare space for people while proposing a new interaction manner through architectural design language. ”
