The LJC (Undergraduate Thesis)
Environmental Design

A center for the independent arts that celebrates the value of graffiti and street art within our urban environments. The LJC (The Lower Junction Triangle’s Independent Arts Centre) is here to help facilitate the growth and crosspollination of Toronto’s street art with its public and contemporary art scenes by providing affordable studio spaces, necessary resources, events, and afterschool educational programs to help independent artists grow and succeed.
“My design is inspired by the flaring strokes of spray paint. The chaotic fluidity of pressurized paint that is released, and reflected in the physical design of my thesis. As chaotic graffiti may appear to be, it is also an art form that requires a lot of technical skill and control in creating connections between letters. The LJC attempts to connect this once isolated site back to its surrounding neighbourhoods through design, creating a more permeable and welcoming site promoting the growth and movement of the arts culture of our city. Although, physically contrasting MOCA and the red brick of my industrial site, The LJC stands to coexist with MOCA and all the surrounding arts and design studios within the area to create a community of healthy collaboration and learning between different arts and people. ”
