This piece is about my faith, culture and upbringing. The central icon in this piece is Our Lady of Guadalupe which ties my Catholic faith with my Latin cultural background. Although the Virgin of Guadalupe originated in Mexico, I feel it can represent all Latin culture. The Virgin is also heavily referenced in so much of the Chicano art in Los Angeles from which I draw inspiration. The bandana print ties in where I come from but also the influence from the Chicano art. As I look for my own identity as a Latin X person in Canada, I am drawn to this art scene in California and of this community. I look to the young Latinos in this community and I can resonate with their struggles and how they are perceived. I, along with others like me, face this hateful perception that we are poor, uneducated criminals because of our complexion and where we live. I am tired of feeling rejected and disregarded, but I cannot and will not deny who I am or where I come from. This work shows my appreciation for Chicano art as it reflects my admiration for these artists that never hide or reject their Latin Culture or the streets -they embrace it.
