SPIN is interested in investigating optics and the ways in which type appears. By intersecting typography with related areas of concern, such as occlusion, motion, dithering, topology, halation, blending, and color, the resulting outputs are studies for interrogating how typography oscillates between recognition and obfuscation. As SPIN relates to the faculty of sight, mechanical motors are used to drive the movement of the tool to facilitate its observational emphasis. Its cylindrical form is a primitive geometry that introduces basic three-dimensional interplays between type and volume. Its shape leads to motions that are the most fundamentally and linearly cyclical. This mechanism makes the resulting outputs combinatory and multiplicative by increasing the number of interacting rolls and varying their motion cycles.
