This drawing is based on an archival photograph of my grandfather, taken while fishing. He sits in the boat and looks directly toward the camera, smiling. There is a sense of ease in the way he’s positioned, as if the photograph was taken without much thought, just part of being out on the water. The original photograph had a warm yellow tone. In translating it into a drawing, I kept the palette restrained, building soft layers of colour gradually across the surface. I worked with a red tint to bring out the warmth and give the image a slightly aged quality. This piece became a way of focusing on the quieter, more consistent parts of life. Fishing has always been something that runs through my family, not just as an activity, but as a way of spending time together.
