Cardboard boxes and wheat paste. 37” x 36” x 48”
“Immigration is a portable sculpture that explores the idea of being incapable of seeing a direction or where you are navigating. The boat is a portable sculpture that portrays the concept of immigration. The artwork also echoes how my ancestors immigrated to Mexico by boat and lived in diaspora, navigating public and private spaces. The personal connection in the work is the correlation between Mexico City, where I was born, and Toronto, both cities built on water. The performative aspect of the piece is through the embodiment of navigation with limitations and identity as others. The materiality of the boat explores the concept of packing and moving by using cardboard boxes. The significance of the cardboard boxes in my life is about the investable life and moved many times as an immigrant in this country.”
