Cave Table

Industrial Design
2023
Basswood, Tung Oil
22" x 12" x 9.8"
The Cave Table was inspired by nature. This monolithic side table designed to feel heavy but minimal using just three parts. The small opening on either end of the table depicted a narrow opening of a cave, which opens to an expansive space inside. Made of soft basswood, assembled by coopering the two legs. Using the Japanese wood burning technique of Yakisugi, the table was burnt with a torch to give it a unique, one of a kind finish that will last forever. The more the table is worn and used, the more that will be added to its story.

“I wanted to create a showcase of a rock balancing on top of a mountain. Strong but delicate. This was an experiment into techniques like wood burning, and coppering to curve the wood. I wanted to learn these, so I went for it. This piece will last forever, and grow with the user. ”
