“ THE HORIZONTAL MONUMENT AS THESIS Our death in spring and the horizontality of the memorial in regards to monuments begs for a pessimism that revokes the self’s right to blissful ignorance. While this horizontal monument perpetuates a deep admiration of the monument itself, it ultimately asks for a conscious view of the self as a thing amongst things, as an object amongst objects. Perhaps a pessimism that is uncomfortably linked to an outward criticism of our desire to immortalize memory, time, existence. Surely it connotes structure within the “memorial” frame, surely one must be able to extend its understanding of form and proportions beyond the body into the structure as removing the idealism of the monument. Why must it all fall under us, we, you if truly our presence is nothing but that, is it so revolting to ask for a consideration that removes you from its center? A monument for monuments sake.”
Toronto based contemporary artist Marina Diolaiti has been investigating spatial awareness and relations of shape and form for what seems to be a greater understanding of space. Through sculpture and installation based work, Diolaiti has expanded on these concepts in search of artistic resolutions. Exploring themes of reflection beyond representations of reality, her practice often results in the reduction of the human through the use of man made materials. Her work often resonates with ideas founded in early minimalism and those of modern conceptual art aiming to urge a self reflection within viewers.Random researching into bachelor pad music, vb preset playlist, eating at dinner tables, refried beans, cilantro rice, barb wire knucles, spring summer egg
