“My work addresses the complex, multifaceted nature of grief and mortality through the exploration of my lived experiences of loss. I reference these experiences through my memories, acknowledging them as living and decaying entities while addressing loss as stagnant, exploring the symbiotic relationship between them. I use my practice to critique the ways in which death is viewed through the western lens and how this influences comfortability in these spaces of conversation. I aim to challenge the taboo nature of these topics by acknowledging mortality as a universal human experience, using memories, objects and food to foster a collective, ongoing conversation about loss, grief and mortality. ”
Lauren D'Ambrosio (she/her) is an emerging artist based in Vaughan and Tkaronto/ Toronto, Ontario. Her practice explores how the subject matter and materiality of a painting can create dialogue and foster connections between artwork and viewer. Working with oil and acrylic paint, raw and primed canvases, and exploring textiles, her practice aims to challenge the preconceptions of western society and bring these topics into open conservation. She works in both abstraction and representation, sometimes combining the two as a way to obscure compositional understanding. She is acquiring a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in Drawing and Painting and a minor in Social Sciences from OCAD University.
