aka. Gabi, Installation/Print media
“Bundled Dwelling/Equipajes Inhabitados brings objects of domestic life and thought on migration, home and self, together in assemblages derived from performance-based installations that seek to connect and re-connect elements within. In their making (bundling, entangling the kitchen table object/s) and materiality, these assemblages locate the process of making and re-making ‘home’ for me as a migrant, and thereby elicit and re-work personal and socio-cultural conceptions, assumptions and memories about my (and perhaps also other’s) home and self territories.”
Gabi Benitez is an Argentinian-Canadian artist based in Cantley, Quebec and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The focus of her MFA research is on dwelling and space-making. This work is influenced by her experience as an immigrant in Canada. In particular, processes of adjustment and re-invention through the materiality we inhabit underlie her most recent installation work. Her interest in 'thinking through making' was stirred through earlier studio practice/explorations while she simultaneously taught and worked with students at various learning levels; as well as by her first MA research in education for the arts. She worked as a Studio Art Technologist with BFA students at Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) for several years.
